Drug, Alcohol, Substance, Gambling and Sex Addiction
It is often very difficult to overcome an addiction and the client will usually feel that they are unable to break the habit. They often feel stuck and totally unable to free themselves from the lure of habitual fulfilment. It is most likely that the reason they failed was their approach to the problem was ineffective. With a more effective approach, you can break free of your addiction. You are not stuck, even though it might feel like you are. While there are several different types of addictions, all are likely to have an increasing effect on your body, mind, and emotions and generally changes the way you live your life.
You may have tried to break free in the past and failed, but that doesn’t mean that you didn't care about it, or that you self-sabotaged. It doesn’t mean that you are useless because you didn't succeed at overcoming an addiction; perhaps you could give consideration that you may need professional help to overcome the problem. You can overcome or manage any addiction, including any form of drug, alcohol, gambling or sexual addiction, with a structured, empirically tested approach and proper guidance. If you've failed at getting your addiction under control, you're not hopeless, you're just dealing with profoundly deep feelings that you don't know how to modify.
Most clients lie to their partners and themselves about their addictive activities. The lies often come in the form of rationalisations such as: "I don't have an addiction to drugs, pornography, alcohol or gambling”. The first objective in counselling is to assist the client to stop lying. The client may have felt that he or she can’t stop lying, but being honest is something that can be learned. The client doesn’t always need medication, or years of therapy analysing a difficult childhood. With professional guidance the client can be completely truthful about any addiction, including drugs, alcohol, gambling, porn addiction, using prostitutes, addictive masturbation, erotic massage and many other forms of addiction.
Will it be easy to overcome drug, sex, gambling or alcohol addiction? Well, this isn’t likely, but anyone willing to be honest about addiction and willing to put in effort can overcome or manage it with help from a good therapist.
